Reporting Source | Core Case Notification Data Element Recommendations
The Reporting Source data class captures information about the type of provider or laboratory that submits a case report to a public health agency. This data helps public health agencies understand where people are being diagnosed and how to target outreach and prevention efforts. Understanding what types of facilities submit reports to public health can also provide insight into and improve disease reporting.
As part of the Data Standardization Workgroup’s (DSWG) broader data standardization efforts, the workgroup discussed the following data elements:
- Reporting Source Type: type of facility or provider associated with the source of information sent to Public Health
- Reporting Source Type: type of facility or provider associated with the source of information sent to Public Health
However, due to complexities in the collection of some of these data at public health agencies, as well as limited applicability to a broader range of health conditions at among disease programs at CDC, the DSWG did not recommend either of these data elements as core data elements for transmission to CDC. State and local jurisdictions are encouraged to continue to collect the most relevant data for their needs, and CDC programs can consider condition-specific implementation of a similar data element on an as-needed basis.
This document was developed by the DSWG, a workgroup within CSTE’s Surveillance Practice and Implementation Subcommittee (SPIS), as part of a broader data harmonization effort conducted in partnership with the CDC. These recommendations support consistent, high-quality data exchange through the identification of “core” surveillance data elements—those that apply across multiple conditions for use in case notifications to CDC—and standardization of those data elements, including definitions, value sets, structure, and interpretation guidance.
