Signs, Symptoms, and Clinical Manifestations | Core Data Elements for Case Notification

The Signs, Symptoms and Clinical Manifestations (SSCM) data class captures information about the clinical features of a disease, including objective signs observed by a clinician and subjective symptoms reported by the patient. Standardizing the collection of signs and symptoms data ensures consistent reporting across jurisdictions, supports accurate case classification, and strengthens public health surveillance and outbreak response.

The value sets for signs and symptoms will be condition dependent; to account for this, the structure for this data class was designed to be flexible and accommodating varying needs across conditions.
