Immunizations | Core Data Elements for Case Notification

Immunization history data are essential for monitoring vaccine-preventable diseases and supporting public health decision-making. High-quality data help track vaccine coverage, guide outbreak response and improve understanding of how vaccination affects disease transmission, severity, and outcomes.  

To date, immunization history standards, such as those developed by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at CDC, have been in use in applicable condition-specific message mapping guides (MMGs). The Data Standardization Workgroup (DSWG) considered these standards for the development of a set of core data elements for use in routine case notifications. The resulting core immunization history data elements were selected to provide jurisdictions with two options for sending immunization information, depending on local capabilities.
