The Reporting Source data class captures information about the type of provider or laboratory that\u202f<\/span>submits<\/span>\u202fa case report to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>public health<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>agency<\/span>. This data helps public health agencies understand where people are being diagnosed and how to target outreach and prevention efforts.\u202f\u202f<\/span>Understanding what types of facilities\u00a0<\/span><\/span>submit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reports to public health can\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provide insight into and improve disease reporting.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      However, due to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>complexities in the collection<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>some of these data at public health agencies, as well as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>limited applicability to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a broader<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>range of health conditions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at among disease programs at CDC<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>the DSWG d<\/span>id<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not recommend either of these data elements as core data elements for transmission to CDC<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>State and local\u00a0<\/span><\/span>jurisdictions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are encouraged to continue to collect the most relevant data for their needs, and CDC programs can consider condition-specific implementation of a similar data element on an as-needed basis.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      This document was developed by the DSWG<\/span>, a workgroup within<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>CSTE\u2019s Surveillance Practice and Implementation Subcommittee (SPIS)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as part of a broader data harmonization effort<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>conducted in partnership with the CDC<\/span>. These recommendations support consistent, high-quality data exchange\u00a0<\/span><\/span>through the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>identifi<\/span>cation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of \u201c<\/span>core<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>surveillance data elements<\/span>\u2014those\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that apply across multiple conditions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for use in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>case<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>notifications\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to CDC<\/span>\u2014and standardization of those data elements, including<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>definitions, value sets, structure, and interpretation\u00a0<\/span><\/span>guidance<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
