Social Determinants of Health | Core Data Elements for Case Notification
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) is a concept in public health used to describe social conditions in which people or communities live that may help identify populations at higher risk of adverse health outcomes. These data are meant to capture data for analysis of how social factors affect health rather than capture a person’s exposures or risk factors relevant to a specific condition.
The Data Standardization Workgroup (DSWG) identified core data elements in five key areas for use in routine case notifications, developing standardized definitions for each: residence type, primary or preferred language, education, income, and insurance. These areas were chosen to capture a snapshot of a person’s demographic data at a time period relevant to a reported condition.
